Consciousness Research Radar

A map of five years of research on consciousness, from mystical experience and the self to meditation, yoga and breath. Choose a topic to see what's been published and follow the connections between ideas.

Built with AI. This collection was gathered and sorted using Perplexity and Claude. It focuses on consciousness in the spiritual and contemplative sense and is unlikely to be fully comprehensive.

This is a loose map, not a strict classification. The topics overlap a lot, and many papers sit in two or three of them. Bubble size shows how many papers are in this collection, not how important a topic is. Lines join topics that share papers.

About this collection

This radar is built on an AI-generated collection of research published between October 2021 and October 2026. The papers were found and sorted using AI tools, Perplexity and Claude, searching two large research indexes, PubMed and Crossref.

It focuses on consciousness in the spiritual and contemplative sense. It doesn't cover the wider science of consciousness, such as brain injury, anaesthesia or machine consciousness.

It's a starting map rather than a complete record. Some important work will be missing and a few papers may be only loosely related. Being included doesn't mean a study is high quality, so do follow the link to the original.

How it's put together

Where the papers come from
Searches of PubMed and Crossref for meditation, mindfulness, yoga, breathwork, prayer, chanting, mystical experience, nonduality, self-transcendence and related terms, screened automatically to 1,922 records. 51 with non-English titles and 25 items that aren't research papers (such as dictionary and encyclopedia entries) were then removed.
How topics are assigned
The eight topics are a loose, practical way in, not a formal classification. Consciousness research doesn't divide neatly, so the topics overlap and many papers belong to more than one. Each paper is placed using its title and keywords, and papers that can't be placed confidently are flagged for review rather than guessed.
Language
The radar includes English-language papers only, judged by title.
Abstracts
Abstracts are being added. Where shown, they are the authors' own published text, taken from OpenAlex, Crossref or PubMed. Nothing is summarised or rewritten by AI.
Keeping it up to date
The papers live in a separate data file, so the collection can be refreshed without redesigning the site.
